Europe’s best big wave was back in the spot lights this month, when the WSL tour saw extreme surfers take on the monster surf at the infamous Praia do Norte in Nazaré, Portugal on Sunday, November 18, 2018.
The air around the sleepy Portuguese town of Nazaré was once again thick with salt and – naturally – terror. Not for the inexperienced surfer, only the world’s best need apply.
If you missed the Nazaré Challenge, its not too late to witness the monster waves in action. The Guinness World Record for the largest wave surfed is a 78-foot (24m) by American-born surfer Garret McNamara. This giant wave spot in Nazaré is created by the 16,000-foot deep underwater Canyon.
Nazare is less than two hours from Lisbon International Airport.
